The furnace is a cylindrical vessel, inclined slightly to the horizontal, which is rotated slowly about its axis. The material to be processed is fed into the upper end of the cylinder. As the kiln rotates, material gradually moves down towards the lower end and may undergo a certain amount of stirring and mixing. Due to the nature of its operation, all scrap forms can be recycled with good results. It is rotated by a friction drive wheel system or by a chain drive depending upon the production requirements. A single door is utilized with either vertical or horizontal rotation depending upon the plant layout.
